This was predominately based the Art of Manliness site, which goes into details of what each category should contain. This to me is a fantastic starting point for the 'ultimate' wardrobe, although it still lacks femininity. Even through I have added skirts into some sections, there is still no place for dresses (other than a formal ballgown) and so this is a gap that I still think needs to be addressed when I work out my complete list of wardrobe items and inevitable sewing list. That being said, I am not a bit skirt and dress wearer, so this may end up being appropriate, although I would still like to explore this further.

The table is best viewed by clicking it for a larger view.

I think that a visual representation is by far the best way to see how the pieces work together cohesively (or not) and also to try to identify any gaps that may exist. When creating these sets in Polyvore, I used colours that I love and feel that will work with my daily life. The core colours can certainly be swapped out to create a wardrobe that suits your lifestyle or colour preferences.

I also found a number of wardrobe suggestions on Forbes, which reflect some slight differences that are worth considering.

The first, Wardrobe Essentials for Young Professionals, outlines 12 essential items which includes your first 10 suits. Since the list of suits is slightly larger, it is worth considering this list if you wear a lot of suits.

There are also a number of lists specific to women, specifically Women's Essentials, Women's Eight Essentials and Modern and Timeless Essentials. All of these lists are also worth reviewing and I will cross-check them against my final wardrobe list.

I reviewed two different posts regarding establishing a wardrobe for men on the Art of Manliness site. I was interested in the Interchangeable Wardrobe and How to Build a Manly Wardrobe, and then how these might translate into an equivalent wardrobe for women. I like the simplicity and versatility of the interchangeable wardrobe and then I can see how the second list is an 'end-goal' for a wardrobe that would be built up over many years. The mapping of the men to women's wardrobes are shown below.

Undergarments missing (e.g. bras, layering

After I put this list together, I came across The Daily Connoisseur and her focus on a 10 core item wardrobe. I have watched a few of her YouTube videos (1, 2, 3) and one of her wardrobes was around 14 items but this isn't everything in her wardrobe. I think that this is important, because the 'extras' that she mentions really allow a person to extend the rotation of the core 14 items and really flesh out the wardrobe. These include things like basic tees,
sweaters & cardigans, outerwear (trench coats, blazer, jackets), special occasion wear, accessories (scarves, bags, shoes, sunglasses) undergarments, shoes and so on, which for my purposes are part of the wardrobe but I can see the benefits of the extras being fairly constant and the 10-14 items being rotated seasonally. I also love her focus on quality items that will last a long time and also how to care for your garments. Her concept is certainly food for thought and only adds more valuable information in my quest to build my wardrobe! I am still reading more about this one and will be sure to do a summary post (that will now be part 6!)

Personally, I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe! I mean, who doesn't love the thought of being able to open up their closet to find a beautifully curated set of clothing items that all work together and making dressing so much easier!

{source}

I find when I start to try to create a capsule wardrobe however, it's not as easy as "pick 20-40 items that work well together and your done!". Everyone has a different style aesthetic and the essential items for one person may not work for another. So, I started to look at many different capsule wardrobe "systems" to see if I could come up with my own. Based on all my reading, I am now working on not creating a capsule wardrobe but a complete wardrobe. This includes garments for all facets of my life.

The main sources I have used so far are:

The Lucky Shopping Manual (Amazon or Book Depository). This book focuses on the essentials and extras you need for a complete wardrobe. According to Amazon, I bought this in 2005 and it is still essential (still invaluable although some images are starting to date slightly)

Colette Patterns Wardrobe Architect. This was run in 2014 and kicked off again in 2015 and I am working through this as part of defining my ideal wardrobe. It is helping me to stop and think about the style, colours, silhouettes etc... that I am most drawn to and hence should be the foundation of my wardrobe.

The Into Mind blog. There are many, many posts that I am reading and a key starting point is Building a Capsule Wardrobe 101. They also have a workbook for €20, which I am considering purchasing although I'm not sure how much it overlaps with the Wardrobe Architect?

The Art of Manliness: How to Build a Wardrobe for Men {link to part 1}. This is probably a strange one however since I am trying to build a corporate wardrobe full of suits, I've been interested in seeing what is considered a complete professional man's wardrobe, since it is comprised of suits and related garments. I have mapped the Constant Professional wardrobe to a female equivalent, which I will post soon. This site also has some great articles on clothing care.

Unfancy. This blog proposes that a 37-piece wardrobe (excluding workout clothes, jewellery, accessories, purses, swimsuits, pajamas/loungewear, underwear and trash-jeans). I like the concept but many of the exclusions are what I want to include in my essential wardrobe.

Other books I'm looking at but don't own. If you own these and can provide a view on their usefulness, please let me know:

The Style Checklist (Amazon or Book Depository).

The One Hundred (Amazon or Book Depository).

Since there is a lot to explore, I will be breaking my discovery process down as follows:

Part 2: Defining a corporate wardrobe based on a men's suit wardrobe

Part 4: Wardrobe Architect: what I have learned through this process

Part 5: The outcome of following the steps on the Into Mind blog

Part 6: The Lucky Shopping Manual

Part 7: 10 piece wardrobe by The Daily Connoisseur and YouTube (edited to add this)

The New Year is always a nice time to stop, reflect and to think about what next.

My year was quite eventful with a job change and studying part time but I still managed to churn out a bit. I'm quite a slow sewer, which I'm totally ok with, so I was happy to produce about 10 tops, mostly for work with a couple of silk and lace ones for more special occasions. None of these are blogged but I will hopefully get these photographed so that I can blog them.

As for my 'resolutions' there are a few key sewing related goals that I have. I have other non-sewing goals, but I'll keep that from this blog :)

First, I have sighed up for the Goodbye Valentino RTW Fast for 2015. I seriously considered doing this last year but ended up not doing it, so this year, I'm in! I know that sale time is when I will find this the most difficult. I still need to work out what I consider ok to buy, since I can't sew everything. So far, I'm thinking undergarments and workout gear is a possibility but since this is on my 'learn to sew' list, why not start this year! I just need to find some decent fabric suitable to exercise wear.

>>> Goal 2 <<<

Limit fabric purchases. This will definitely be harder than no RTW but I'm still keen to make a dent in my stash, so this one stays. If I need to make something to keep my RTW Fast Pledge, then I will purchase fabrics. I may also give myself a small allowance so that I don't have to go cold turkey.

>>> Goal 3 <<<

Build a <strike>capsule</strike> complete wardrobe. This one is something that I have been thinking a lot about and will put all my thoughts together in a post but the key thing for me is building a wardrobe that will work for me. By that, I don't mean a wardrobe that fits some definition of the perfect capsule wardrobe but instead one that works for me. I have looked at quite a few capsule recommendations and I feel like none of them will work for me but are a great jumping off point. There is definitely more to come on this one and it will drive what I sew in 2015.

>>> Goal 4 <<<

Focus on building my sewing skills. This is something that requires a list!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-74292397571114509552014-04-25T16:23:00.004+10:002014-04-25T16:24:56.193+10:00Pattern Anthology videoI first heard about Pattern Anthology when Julia Bobbin posted her fabulous Parisian Tops from the Just Add Jeans collection. I was instantly in love with the beautiful patterns and versatility of the tops in the collection. I could see them being made up as casual or dressy tops, depending on the fabrics used and the bottoms that they were coordinated with (e.g. jeans, dress pants, suit pants, skirts).

So I quickly snapped up a copy of the entire Just Add Jeans collection and they are sitting waiting patiently for me to get started on them!

In the meantime, I also found this fantastic video about Pattern Anthology. I just want to meet and hangout with these amazing women!

{source}

Have you been watching the Great British Sewing Bee? If not, get to it - I'll wait!

Seriously, the show is fantastic! I fell in love with the show in Series One and was so excited when they not only came back for Series Two but they DOUBLED the number of episodes. That's right, twice the sewing awesomeness! (oh and there is a Series Three planned too - woo hoo!!)

I love that the contestants are competitive but also seem to develop genuine friendships - the sewing room seems like it would be an amazing space to sew in (not to mention the haberdashery!). In addition, Claudia does a great job hosting the show and Patrick and May always have good feedback for the sewers garments. I'm sure I'm not the only person to critique my sewing and think, "I wonder what May and Patrick would say about this?" Well, maybe it is just me ...

So, I would suggest that if you haven't already, make yourself a cuppa and settle in to watch the show. You would regret it!

Also, the finale was this week, so Googling "Great British Sewing Bee" is likely to produce hits that tell you who won. So if you want it to be a surprise, don't Google it and go straight to the BBC site!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-54225931762390977652013-03-31T18:15:00.001+11:002013-03-31T19:53:33.903+11:00Fabric shopping in SingaporeYou might want to get a cup of tea before you start reading this post - I've included as much detail as possible and the post is very pic heavy!

View from my hotel room (level 37 of Swissotel Stamford Plaza, Singapore)

At the start of March I had to go to Singapore for 10 days for work. It's not quite the same as a holiday but I certainly made the most of my time there - especially since we were there for a weekend! What did that mean? Fabric Shopping!!

My shopping plan

I did some research before my trip, which included the following links. Kat from All the whimsical things also gave me some great suggestions when I put a call out on twitter for suggestions (thanks Kat!).

Sewing Supplies in Singapore @ notabilia

Fabric Sources @ Sew Convert

So when Saturday rolled around, I was ready to head out to the following (there are more places listed on notabilia but these were my shortlist):

Arab St (nearest MRT station Bugis) - I planned to just explore the shops here, with Alta Moda and Collezione definitely on my hit list. The stores I purchased from are as follows:

Kadir: 116 Arab St (Tel: 62 945 787). Beautiful quilting cottons and other cottons. Cash only.

Aladdin's Exclusive: 110 Arab St (Tel: (65) 6398 0944). An assortment of silks, laces, polyesters at varying prices. I was sold $5 'silk' which I knew was really polyester but the prints were lovely so I wasn't too fussed. Still, buyer beware!

At this stage, I decided stopping at every shop would take me all day ... so I moved onto my must visits!

Teng Joo: 102 Arab St. I only browsed and was so overwhelmed by the rolls and rolls and rolls in large containers. I'm told the prices are cheap but nothing was labeled, so I wasn't sure what was what. I'm sure there are gems to be found but it would require some time and patience to dig!

Alta Moda: 92 Arab St (Tel: (65) 6296-7117, email: sales@altamoda.com.sg). Some seriously stunning fabrics. Silks (non-branded, Valentino, Pucci, Ungaro, to name a few), suiting and shirt fabrics upstairs (including Ermenegildo Zegna, Roberto Di Camerino and Lanifico Di Tollegna, among other designer labels) and some Chanel fabrics. Anita served me and was lovely and incredibly helpful.

Collezione: 99 Arab St (Tel: (65) 6292 5755, email: farooq@quattro.com.sg). Gorgeous silks from Italy and Korea. Also had some lovely linens.

Jalan Sultan Textile Centre (200 Jalan Sultan). Three floors of sewing supplies and also an amazing looking suit fabric supply store. Not all stores are open on a weekend, so weekdays are better however I still found plenty on a Saturday. The places where I shopped were as follows and only on the first floor. I found out after I left that there were 2 more floors!

Sing Mui Heng Pte Ltd: #01-27 (Tel: (65) 6297 0211, email: sales@singmuiheng.com, web: www.singmuiheng.com). Haby galore! Overlocker thread, a huge range of buttons down the back, Swarovski flat backs, all sorts of tools and notions, some items in bulk (e.g. box of 12 tailors chalk).

Sin Hin Chuan Kee Pte Ltd: #01-08 (Tel: 6298 8622). Stocks the largest range of overlocker threads that I saw. Also stock a HUGE range of YKK zippers. I only bought some trouser zips in basic colours but next time I'll take swatches and zip length for overlocker threads and zips. I wish I had a photo of all the zips - it was awesome!

Sungai Industrial (S)Co Pte Ltd: #01-10 (Tel: (65) 6294 2642, email: sungai@singnet.com.sg). I think this is more of a supply store for store owners, however I did find some label rolls with '100% Polyester', 'Dry Clean' etc... They were out of '100% silk', '100% wool' and '100% cotton'. She said they could get more in within 2 days but with work I couldn't go back.

RSK Singapore Pte Ltd: #01-35 (Tel: (65) 6292 7433, email: rsk_singapore@hotmail.com). I only browsed briefly but they have a HUGE range of wools for suits and cottons for shirts (including some designer labels - I saw a lot of Dormeuil, among others). It's about 3 stores wide and rows and rows of fabric on bolts. I didn't end up buying anything and don't know the prices but next time I will go here first for suiting fabrics.

People’s Park Complex, particularly Nicolexavier shop number 02-1138 (in Chinatown - I took a taxi and ended up in People's Park Complex next door. Look for shop numbers on level 2 that are in the 1000s (e.g. #02-1138). If there are in the 10s or 100s, ask for directions. Most people weren't sure but the guy at the security desk was very helpful! Once you arrive, you'll know because it's an entire floor of fabric stores.

You could spend a whole day exploring the shops here. I was getting tired by this point, so I just browsed briefly then high-tailed to Nicolexavier.

Bee Bee Textiles: #02-1136 (Tel: 6533 9490). This was right next to Nicolexavier and I just happened to find a knit that I liked.

Nicolexavier: #02-1138 (Tel: (65) 6532 7856, email: xavierng@singnet.com.sg). A good range of Linton Tweeds (the mill where Chanel gets their boucles from), Liberty tana lawns and other designer fabrics.

I ran out of time and energy to go to Spotlight at Plaza Singapura (MRT Station Dhoby Ghaut, then follow the signs to Plaza Singapura - level 5) but I had a brief look the following day. Basically the same as the Aussie stores!

I also stumbled across Joe's Tailoring & Fashion Design and noticed that they have some great fabrics for suits and shirts that they can tailor for you or you can buy by the metre. I was particularly interested in the Thomas Mason shirt fabrics. I stopped by the one at 50 Market St, Singapore 048940 (Tel:+65 6225 0686, closest MTR is Raffles Place)

Summary and Singapore shopping suggestions

If you can shop on a weekday, that is what I would suggest however most places are still open Saturday. I'm understand that most shopping districts are closed on Sunday and I'm also told that the shops in Arab St close early on a Friday.

Most stores are open 10-5, although some open earlier at 9am. If you can, get out early before it gets too busy.

Plan ahead - work out which shops/areas you want to visit and how to get there. A taxi is always an option if you are unsure but I saved the taxis for getting my goodies back to my hotel. The MRT is also an easy way to travel - just work out which station is closest to your location.

Take a list of what you want/need. It can be easy to get overwhelmed when there are sooo many stores. That being said, sometimes you find fabrics that you may not 'need' but they still manage to follow you home!

If you have specific zips that you need, take fabric swatches and the zip length. The zipper variety at Sin Hin Chuan Kee Pte Ltd in the Jalan Sultan Textile Centre is huge, so make sure you know what you need!

Since the overlocking thread colours are limited in Australia, I would take fabric swatches and stock up on overlocking threads in the stores in Jalan Sultan Textile Centre.

Check your baggage allowance before you travel. Fabric is heavy. Just saying :)

Then I thought, do I really need another crafty hobby? Turns out, I do!!

It all started when I was perusing Ravelry and I kept finding cute patterns. Unfortunately for me, they were crochet patterns (ok, so there are cute knitting patterns but the grass is always greener, you know?!)

So, a few weeks ago when hunting for a stitch and b*tch group near me I found a meetup group that is literally in the next suburb. What are the chances, right?! So I looked at their upcoming meetups and discovered they were running a couple of intro crochet evenings. These classes covered making 2D and 3D flowers, including chaining (casting on) and then double stitches (using UK terminology) in class 1. Then class 2 included treble stitches to make granny squares and hexagons.

So without further ado, here are my class makes!

2D and 3D flowers from my first Crochet Class

Granny Squares and Hexagons from my second Crochet Class

Between classes I wanted to practice a little and found YouTube to be invaluable. My previous attempts at learning on YouTube were a bit of a fail but once I'd learnt the basics in person, I found that understanding videos much, much easier. So after playing around with a few stitches, I started on a ripple scarf using the Neat Ripple Blanket tutorial over at Attic24 (also on Ravelry). For the sample size, she suggests 31 (2x14 +3) and I decided to go a bit wider to 45 (3x14 +3) and I'm using Morris Estate 8Ply. For more project details, head over to my Ravelry.

Here they are finally ... my Sorbettos! I'm still trying to work out the best way to take photos of them, since I have a tripod but no real camera and getting someone to take them when the sun's up is proving challenging! I thought I'd try a few options and whilst they aren't great, they are confirming that I need to buy a real camera! At least, that's the excuse I'm going to use ;)

Taped up downloaded Sorbetto pattern

So let's get to the details! I patch-worked the print-at-home pattern and traced it off onto pattern paper. Then it took quite a few pattern alterations to get it to fit well, so I thought I'd detail the pattern for anyone else wanting to learn to alter to fit themselves better.

Sorbetto Pattern Alterations

Based on initial measurements of the pattern, I realised that the top would be way too short for me. I started by extending the length of the of the bodice in two places - at the notch by 9 cm and then at the hem for another 2 cm, giving me a total of 11 cm extra (see, way too short!)

I then looked at the width and identified the need for an FBA, before sewing up my first toile. When I made this up in my first fashion fabric, I decided to add some subtle waist-shaping that is also shown below.

Front and Back adjustments

The first fitting highlighted the need to make a few more changes - I extended and increased the size of the dart to remove some more fullness and identified the need to alter the back as well to remove a little fullness, so I introduced a centre back seam. This made it much easier to remove this fullness.

I also lowered the sleeve, as I was finding it was cutting into my underarm a little. It was only slight but still worth the adjustment.

In the second toile, I decided to drop the position of the dart as it was sitting slightly too high on me. I only dropped it by about 1-1.5cms, keeping the angle the same.

Shifted dart down (pink is the original placement, blue is the new placement)

Sleeve Pattern Alterations

I decided to make my first version with sleeves, using the free sleeve pattern made by Mena at Sew Weekly and then updated by Sew, Incidentally).

I measured the sleeve against my altered Sorbetto and realised that it was too small, so I assume the free pattern was for a smaller Sorbetto size. So I did a bit of slashin' and spreadin' to make the sleeve the right size.

In the image below, you can see the method I used. I marked the lines on the pattern to show where I wanted to cut the sleeve up and number each piece so I wouldn't get confused. I then marked a line on another piece of paper (pink line) and used this to line up the lines. I then split the sleeve up by 1 cm in 5 places, as per the yellow lines, based on the amount of additional sleeve I needed to fit the bodice of my pattern. In order to ensure the sleeve head was still well-shaped, I raised the middle sections by either .5 or 1 cm. Once I had the graded sleeve, I re-traced this onto another piece of pattern paper. I smoothed the edges out as I retraced and then re-confirmed that the sleeve would fit correctly.

Sleeve adjustments

When I made up my second toile, I found that the sleeve kind of stuck out (like little wings!), so I pinned out the fullness in a couple of places. I then transferred the changes to the pattern and started cutting out my real fabric!

Final sleeve, showing removed fullness

Final patterns with all adjustments

Once I'd made this up in my first fashion fabric, I found that the neckline was wider than I liked and also lower at the back than I would prefer for work tops. So for my second version, I altered the neckline by raising it at the back by 5 cm and at the shoulders by 2 cm. I didn't alter the front neckline at all, as this was perfect already!

I've been reading my favourite blog summaries of 2012 and plans for 2013 and everyone is so inspiring. I don't really have a lot to recap for 2012, since my blog is still in it's infancy however the most exciting sewing event was my return to weekly sewing classes. It's been a great way to get back into more consistent sewing, improving my pattern drafting and altering skills, sewing skills and having loads of fun on a Saturday morning with the sewing gals!

I also entered the Tessuti Awards for the first time. Whilst I didn't win, I really enjoyed challenging myself to sew to a theme and to extend my sewing, pattern drafting and pattern draping skills. The stripe matching took quite a bit of time, patience and hand-sewing but it was 100% worth it! If anyone is interesting a reading about the process, let me know and I'll do a blog post about it.

The next highlight is getting a blog up and running. I've spent a lot of time playing around with the look and feel of the blog and bringing any valuable posts over from my old and quiet blog! Since I still feel like I'm only just kicking off my new blog, I'm calling today my official blog starting day for anniversary purposes. Woo!

So onto planning for 2013

I feel like my blog is a big part of my plans for 2013. I would like to blog at least once every week but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't!

One of the key reasons why I started sewing, was to be able to get great fitting clothes which is difficult with RTW due to my height. So focusing on fit is an important part of my year. I'm not one to turn out a garment a week (hats off to those who can do that!), so I'm not going to pressure myself to churn out garments when it's just not feasible for me.

I've toyed with the idea of doing a SWAP over at Artisan Square and the rules this year look achievable. I've been doing a lot of planning, selecting patterns and pre-treating of fabrics.

Get more involved in the blogging community. I'm an avid reader of quite a few blogs but I tend to keep quiet and rarely post comments. This is something I want to change! I just need to work out the most efficient way to do this, particularly using my commute. I normally read blogs on my RSS reader but never really got the hang of commenting at the same time. So that is something I want to change!

Make some of the things I've pinned. I love pinterest and am addicted to pinning all manner of pictures but I rarely make the time to go back and make up some of the items.

So here's to an awesome 2013!

{source}

After seeing so many beautiful Sorbetto tops on the blogosphere, I've wanted to make my own version for some time now.

It's hard to believe that it was released as a free pattern a little over 1 year ago in May 2011 from the awesome Colette Patterns. There are so many inspirational Sorbetto versions out there (head over to my Sorbetto inspiration board on Pinterest to see what I mean) and it's hard to not be inspired by them - there's even a free sleeve pattern to vary it further! It's such a versatile pattern and can be tweaked to create many variations. It was also voted as #2 in Pattern Review's Best Patterns of 2011. In short, it's a winner!

I've been altering this pattern for a few weeks now and I think I'm pretty close with completing all the necessary adjustments. It's a simple silhouette but I wanted to focus on fabulous fit, so I've made 2 toiles and countless tweaks. I should have my first pattern adjustment post this weekend, so stay tuned!

P.S. Welcome to my new blog url. I've been shifting posts from my old blog to here and re-focusing the content. I hope you enjoy the ride!

My head is still full of so many ideas (and my cupboards are full of awesome fabric and patterns!) so I want to try and channel my creative energy by setting weekly goals.
So welcome to my first "Weekly Goals" post!

Goals for 21 March - 27 March 2011

Finish my Vogue 8506 (first blogged about here)

Do some lining and underlining practice, as I'm currently doing the Pattern Review classes on these topics (which are great but I'm yet to sit down and practice!)

Exercise daily - including all the classes I'm booked in for

Make some cards using stamped images coloured with copics.

Post the backlog of written posts!

Tool roll for my Scrapbooking files

Knitting needle roll, based on this awesome tutorial, with another two here and here

Warm PJ pants, as the weather is getting colder here but I'm waiting on my Jalie order for Jalie 2686

And then there's the RTW Sew-Along. This is one I'll be reading with excitement and taken notes on too. I see a RTW style coat in my near future, especially with winter around the corner :)

Ideas for next week (my idea list is way longer than this, but this is a short list of what I want to work on in the near future)
Oh and have you seen the latest Sew-Alongs to hit the blogosphere? After the awesomely successful Men's Shirt Sew-Along at MPB, Peter is hosting a Jeans <s>party</s> Sew-Along. I have my Jalie 2908 en route but I'm not sure if I'll join the Sew-Along. I'll probably just watch from the sideline taking notes so that when I'm ready to make jeans I'll have all the info on hand!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-86354954076360805042011-01-22T10:39:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:34:15.477+11:00Sewing up Vogue 8506, view D

I've been working on this bag since late last year and I think it's getting close to being finished. I had to make a few minor changes to the construction and have added some extra features (additional internal zip pocket, snap clasps instead of tabs on the sides) and I'm also looking at adding a d-ring on the inside so that I can add a removable wallet and also a clip for my keys. But I'm still working on those parts! That and the extra pocket (based on the internal pocket from Vogue 8590 by Marcy Tilton)

Oh and I've also finally joined Tasia's Pendrell Sew-Along and Peter's Shirt Sew-Along as I was inspired by this totally awesome version of the Negroni. My brother has given this fabric the tick of approval too, so it looks like I will be making something like this for him. I have my Pendrell fabric but it probably won't be sewn up for a few months due to other commitments. And I have my Negroni pattern and fabric on order, so I think I'll be late on that too! I also wanted to join Sunni's Pant Sew-Along but that's another one I'll be doing later on. So many sew-alongs in January and I just don't have the time for all of them!!! lol oh wellBelindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-73113401770454316782011-01-02T12:33:00.000+11:002012-12-18T18:59:32.083+11:002010 recap and 2011 goalsI can't believe it's day 2 of 2011 - where did 2010 go? I feel like it went really fast and was a so-so year for me. So I was ready to bring on 2011!

From a sewing goals perspective, I don't think I did that well in 2010. I did sew more but no where near what I wanted. I started lots of sew-alongs and finished ... none. Terrible, I know!

So that brings me to 2011 ... I'm calling it the year of finishing things, since I've identified that I start lots of things but finish very few. I think my list of UFOs doesn't quite capture all of my UFOs (I have sewing, scrapbooking and knitting UFOs!) so I will be working to update that list to give myself a good target.

I've also decided to try to keep posts sewing related with the occasional non-sewing but craft related post thrown in for good measure. I'm also planning to blog at least once a week - I know, considering my last year that will be tough but I'm up for the challenge!!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-77798332570708699702010-10-30T21:20:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:33:09.946+11:00Thinking about SWAP 2011Part of me thinks it could be madness but it could be a good chance to make some good progress on building my wardrobe in preparation for *gulp* Me-Made-March and/or Me-Made-May ...
We usually get started late August (I think) but time just ran away from us (wasn't it January just the other month?) So the fruits been soaking since Saturday and the puddings are now boiling as I type and we should get the cakes on in the next few days.

Photos to come!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-31145498400145076192010-10-24T21:49:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:31:53.989+11:00Sponge Cake!I was inspired by a post this week over at 2paw where she made a yummy looking sponge cake. So here is mine! Sorry for the fuzzy phone photos. My camera was out of battery.

The cake has a non-traditional filling of Persimmon and Orange jam and then the usual whipped cream. The reason I put Persimmon and Orange jam is because we have a Persimmon tree (soft eating Persimmons) and we always have too many and are trying to find recipes to use them up. We've made Persimmon cakes, Persimmon chews and most recently Persimmon and Orange jam, which is seriously yummy! I've been eating it on toast every day since my mum made it :o)

So the cake was a hit but there are a few things I'd do differently:

I had to cook it for longer. It has 15-18 minutes, at 15mins I checked it and it was very wobbly in the middle. Then I did another 4 mins and then 2 mins about 3 times until is was cooked.

It was quite a wide but short cake (I think it was a non-measured 9" tin - ie my handspan plus a bit!) so next time I'd use the normal 7" tin (my handspan-ish) and make it higher. It will make it easier to cut into layers.

Things got a bit crazy and then once I'd missed one day it was easy to miss a few more.

It all started on Friday night. I went out to some work drinks and had a so-so night. I won't go into the details but I headed home thinking I should have gone straight home to work on a summery skirt instead. Lesson learnt - do what I want to do! So then I got home and couldn't be bother to log onto my computer.

Saturday rolled around and it was my first Saturday sleep in for months. Since the weather outside was pretty awful, I spent an hour or so snoozing in bed before I got up and did some cleaning. Then I headed out in the afternoon for some scrapbooking fun! I was working on a Printers Tray and will post photos when complete (might be awhile away!). On my way home, I caught up with a friend for what was to be a quick dinner but ran later than expected. By the time I got home, I just rolled into bed ... especially knowing I had such a big day ahead of me on Sunday!

Which brings me to Sunday! I headed up to Brisvegas for the day with some sewing buddies to see the Valentino Exhibition. All I can say is wow! It was really awesome! There were about 100 dresses on display, along with some other memorabilia and short movies. There is also a book catalog but they are sold out - so I'll be getting mine on Amazon. You can order it but I'm doing an Amazon order soon anyway.

If you get the chance - go and see it! If I was to do it again, I would go for the weekend and go 2 days in a row. You take different things in each time and there is just sooo much to see. I would live to see the inner construction of so many of them and now I want to see The Last Emperor again. Must ... buy ... DVD :) I will post more about my thoughts and favourite dresses (if I can find some pics online!)

Then the start of this week has been a combination of feeling like I'm getting over jetlagged (Sunday I was up 3am - midnight!). Then work has been busy with a bunch of late nights - which brings us up to today!

On the sewing front, I'm falling behind of my Lady Grey. Between being flat out, gathering my notions and not even pre-treating my fabric, I'm a good week or 2 behind I think. Yikes! I need to get my skates on! It will be hard though with a work deadline fast approaching and weekends busy with house hunting and classes, so I might end up doing it on my sewcation. Yep, you heard right! I have cup week off and plan to spend some of that time at home and then 3 days in King Island.

I'm also still in the planning (procrastinating?) phase of a couple of summer skirts. They should also get completed during my week off.

Oh and I fell off the stash busting bandwagon. Clegs have a sale on and I picked up some fabrics I've been eyeing for awhile. Bad, I know! That's why I started the stash busting challange - to curb my fabric purchasing! So I guess I will need to finish A LOT of garments to catch up. Argh!!!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-68199683188759327102010-10-14T23:24:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:29:21.280+11:00Cutter & Tailor forumThrough my researching about Tailoring in preparation for my Lady Grey (which is still behind!) I found some cool stuff at the Cutter & Tailor forum.

I've only read a little but here are some interesting reads:
Hours of reading lay before you! :)Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-68275722624689965032010-10-13T21:56:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:29:06.823+11:00Blogtoberfest - self portrait (a loose interpretation)I feel like this is a total cop-out because I didn't get the time to draw the self portrait that I wanted to (this thing called work got in the way ... ).

So here it is ... (◑.◑) ... yep, hopeless (but cute!)

I also found this in my travels:

I might try to draw something this weekend. I'm flying to Brisvegas for the Valentino Exhibit, so I should have a few hours in the flight to get this done. I say "should" but since it's a 6:30ish flight I might be sleeping instead!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-54432947888040877452010-10-12T21:37:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:28:35.960+11:00Back to RJs I wentSo, it turns out that I didn't buy enough hair canvas and the shoulder pads were WAY too big. So I went back to RJs today to get some extra supplies (oh and stay tape as I forgot that yesterday, although I'm not 100% sure about it - should it be twill tape? It's not very firm).

So once I had all my bits and pieces, they wrapped up my purchases in brown paper (this is what they normally do) but then they also tied it up with string! It even had a little loop "handle" so I could carry it. What a lovely experience! I think I was grinning to myself all the way back to work. In fact, when I saw it on my desk all afternoon I kept wanting to sing "brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favourite things!"

I should probably add the sleeves to my muslin and pre-wash my fabric ... I'm getting sooo behind!!

Photos of the package contents to come!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-21521440209198977902010-10-11T23:35:00.000+11:002012-10-20T20:28:15.489+11:00I have most of my tailoring supplies!I finally got the chance to go to RJs today and then Clegs to get my tailoring goodies. I forgot twill tape though, so will head back on Wednesday to get that and more hair canvas if required. I'm also still in need of black silk thread and thicker muslin if what I bought isn't thick enough. Will post pics when I can!Belindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12023998257905055003noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426824628169270920.post-56090844113833627752010-10-10T21:27:00.000+11:002013-01-03T18:19:22.645+11:00Pavlova!I mentioned yesterday that I had loose plans, not all of which eventuated but I did have a great day - including enjoying the beautiful Melbourne weather!

So this morning I dropped into the Craft Expo. It was not too big and not overcrowded either. I managed to pick up some great scrapbooking and card making supplies and a few fat quarters to make a bag. Not too much really.

When I left there around midday, it was such a beautiful day outside I just wanted to enjoy it! I ducked by the supermarket to get some fruit and cream for the Pavlova and then home to get it in the oven. Whilst it was baking I just lounged around at home (including out in the sun on the lawn! Did I mention the weather was beautiful today?!).

The only think I didn't get done was some sewing! Oops! Oh well.

The Pavlova was for a family birthday celebration. It's not my birthday until December but I'm in this "group" when it comes to birthdays so I made the Pavlova as my cake. The other 2 cakes were chocolate on chocolate. I initially wasn't going to eat it (due to my Blogtoberfest personal challenge) but I caved and ate some ... so that makes it 2 strikes! I'm thinking that once October ends I'll revise this challenge to not eating chocolate that I have purchased. So it means I can't buy chocolate but if it's at a function or dinner and chocolate is served , then I can have some. This should still stop the 3:30pm munchies at work.

At least the Pavlova went down well!

If you want the recipe, it's from Masterchef. I decorated with blueberries, raspberries & mango and would consider shavings of chocolate over the top next time.

I did notice a couple of things with this recipe:

The outer shell cracked which I think is due to too much sugar. I wonder if when I was measuring the egg whites if I was maybe 15mls under? I will pay more attention next time.

I think the egg white "soft peaks" were maybe not quite stiff enough. When I went to shape it I couldn't get it as high as the photos in the magazine because it wasn't thick enough (Masterchef Magazine 1, with tips on styling).

The cream was on for maybe 10-15mins before it was served and it started to collapse on one side. It was either too heavy toppings or due to the way the shell cracked. A second try at this recipe will hopefully improve on this.
